FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
McLean, Virginia — August 17, 2026 — GeoScienceWorld (GSW) today announced the launch of GeoSapienAI (https://geosapien.ai/), an AI research assistant developed in collaboration with leading geoscience societies to help researchers search, understand, and explore peer-reviewed geoscience literature.
Developed specifically for the geoscience community, GeoSapienAI searches and synthesizes information exclusively from GSW’s collection of peer-reviewed journals, books, and other scholarly publications contributed by its society partners. Every response includes citations and links to the original sources, allowing researchers to verify information, explore the underlying literature, and confidently build on existing research.
Building on GSW’s mission to aggregate and disseminate trusted geoscience research, GeoSapienAI is designed to complement, not replace, the scholarly research process. Because it draws exclusively from peer-reviewed content rather than the open web, GeoSapienAI is already fluent in discipline-specific terminology and grounds every answer in authoritative scientific evidence, reducing the risk of hallucinations. If the published literature does not support an answer, GeoSapienAI indicates that rather than generating unsupported information.
As AI becomes an increasingly common way for researchers to search for and discover scientific literature, GSW developed GeoSapienAI to provide the geoscience community with a trusted alternative. Built on a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) architecture, GeoSapienAI retrieves information rather than training on user searches or queries, reflecting GSW’s commitment to responsible, transparent use of artificial intelligence.
“As a nonprofit, GeoScienceWorld exists to serve the geoscience community. That’s exactly why we developed GeoSapienAI—to ensure geoscientists have an AI tool built specifically for their needs and grounded in peer-reviewed content published by societies they trust. We see this as a natural evolution of the role GSW has played for over two decades,” said GSW Board Chair Bridgette Moore.
The development of GeoSapienAI was made possible in part through the generous financial support of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG).
“AI has the potential to change how geoscientists find, connect, and use research, but the quality of the results depends on the quality of the science behind it,” said AAPG Executive Director Tom Wilker. “GeoSapienAI brings AI together with trusted, peer-reviewed content to give geoscientists a more effective way to access knowledge. AAPG is proud to support this resource for the global geoscience community.”
GeoSapienAI is built on peer-reviewed publications contributed by 21 scientific societies and publishing partners.
“As AI becomes an increasingly important part of the research process, it’s essential that these tools are grounded in trusted scholarly content. GeoSapienAI demonstrates what scientific societies can accomplish by working together to help researchers discover and navigate scientific literature with confidence. The Geological Society of London is delighted to be part of this collaborative effort,” said The Geological Society Director of Publishing Maggie Simmons.
