(McLean, VA) September 13, 2023 – The Governance Committee for GeoScienceWorld (GSW) is seeking qualified applicants for the GSW Board of Directors. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to the future of collaboration, research, and governance in the earth sciences.  As Colin North, Board Chair and Senior Lecturer in Geology at the University of Aberdeen notes, “GeoScienceWorld is celebrating 20 years of collaboration and commitment to science in 2024. As we look back on these accomplishments, we’re also looking at the challenges and opportunities ahead of us. We’re confident that the additional perspective provided by someone early in their career will be of great value as we plan for the future.”

The board is keen to consider applicants with the following qualifications and interests:

  • An early career researcher (ECR), as defined by 5-9 years post-highest degree, or equivalent professional training and experience
  • Employed in academia, government, or industry
  • Expertise in emerging trends, workflow tools, and applications in the geosciences
  • A strategic thinker with a business mindset (i.e., capable of analyzing data and information to formalize an opinion or point of view, identifying opportunities and risks, and developing innovative solutions that align with the organization’s mission, vision, goals, and objectives)

Applicants from underrepresented geographies and groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Understanding of Open Access publishing from a researcher or author perspective is a valued perspective.

Gretchen Gillis, Chair of the Governance Committee for GSW, added “This is an exciting opportunity for an early career researcher to add their voice to an organization that is forward thinking and working in collaboration with and for the benefit of societies, researchers, students, and authors all across the earth sciences.”

About GeoScienceWorld
GeoScienceWorld (GSW) was founded in 2004 with a mission to enable geoscience societies to better serve their discipline and community through collaboration. The goal of our co-founders was to bring together peer-reviewed society research online in a nonprofit aggregate and to convey cooperative advantages, so that smaller organizations would be uplifted and supported by their larger colleagues.

Today, we work with societies, institutions, and researchers around the world to provide a single source of access to leading scholarly journals and ebooks.

Through our Society Services program, we provide innovative products and shared services to help societies reduce costs and increase efficiency. Recently, GSW expanded its expertise into open-access publishing in alliance with seven participating societies. Since our founding in 2004, GSW has returned nearly $60 million to membership societies to achieve their scientific missions.
