“The information is critically important for addressing societal challenges, such as living with the impacts of climate change, groundwater management, Earth hazards, energy transition. So it’s really important to a number of sectors across the earth sciences, from industry through academia, for research purposes, consultancies, and the government sector, of course. Geoscience is critically important as a field of endeavor and activity in science research at the moment. It really does hold the key to many of the major societal global challenges, which are facing humanity at this point. For example, living with the impacts of climate change, sourcing those essential, critical metals, which will underpin the energy transition. Living with Earth’s hazards, making sure our groundwater resources are properly managed, so that they are sustainably used.”
