GeoScienceWorld Diversity and Representation Award

Applications are due by April 30, 2023, for the inaugural award

The Earth Sciences are one of the least diverse STEM fields. People of color earn only 6.7% of geoscience doctorates. Only 20% of PhDs in the geosciences are granted to women. Statistics based on sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, and neurodiversity aren’t even calculated, as the field is only beginning to reckon with the fullness of its diversity and representation problem.

As a nonprofit serving more than 35 scholarly societies in the Earth Sciences and open access publisher, GeoScienceWorld has seen the downstream effects of this historical inequity. The only conclusion is to respond, even in some small way, to bring a greater diversity of voices and minds into the publication record by removing the barriers to inclusion and diversity.

GeoScienceWorld is excited to announce the inaugural GeoScienceWorld Diversity and Representation Award, a new annual scholarship designed to help young researchers who have felt excluded or underrepresented in the Earth Sciences to prosper. The goals of this award are:

  • To help keep geoscientists from underrepresented communities in the Earth Sciences, so that the field may continue to benefit from their contributions
  • To provide financial assistance that helps overcome undue burdens that geoscientists from underrepresented communities face
  • To uplift the voices of geoscientists from underrepresented communities and provide a platform for their stories

Eligibility

The GSW Diversity and Representation Award is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and District of Columbia who:

  • Are graduate students or postdoctoral fellows at American institutions within the United States enrolled in an Earth Sciences degree program
  • Are at least 18 years of age at the time of their submission
  • Self-identify as an underrepresented minority in Earth Sciences.

Limit one application per person. Employees of GeoScienceWorld and members of the Award Editorial Board, including companies involved in the implementation and execution of the Award, and the immediate families and those living in the same household of the foregoing, are not eligible to enter. Government officials are also not eligible to enter. Entrants may be subject to rules imposed by their institutions or employers relative to their participation in trade promotions and should check with their institutions or employers for any relevant policies.
